Golf Tips
One Hour to Lower Scores
Ted Frick
Director of Schools - Classic Swing Golf School
Effective practice habits are essential when your golf goal is lowering your handicap. An analysis of the type of shots played in a round of golf and the average number of times each is used definitively illustrates what you should practice, when you should practice, and how you should practice. It is all in the numbers. Putting equates to approximately forty percent of every golfers’ overall score. Short game shots from ten yards off the green and closer accounts for another ten percent. In other words, roughly fifty percent of all shots in a round of golf occur within ten yards of the green or on the green! The scoring clubs for all golfers include the putter, eight iron through sand wedge, and for many, the gap wedge and lob wedge as well.
Putting With A Purpose
Cheryl A. Brankel, PGA Professional
Whenever I ask someone that is trying to lower his or her scores, “How is your putting?” They usually reply, “I'm pretty good at putting.” If you really want to lower your scores, putting is the first place to look. Putting accounts for over 40% of your total score. If you could save yourself three putts a side, that's six strokes! That is the difference between shooting in the 100' s to shooting in the 90's, or 90's to the 80's.
Next time you are playing a round, keep track of your putts. See how many three putts you have in a round. Also, keep track of the length of your initial putt. If you are three putting because you are not getting it close enough on the first try, you will need to work on your distance. Remember that putting is about distance and direction. If you putt it the right distance and the direction “they” will go in!
Address, Impact and Path
Classic Swing Golf School
Our teaching staff constantly works on three areas - Address, Impact, and Path - where illusions hinder golfers' potential. Not rebuilding, but reprogramming mindset is the key to effective instruction.
Be A Swinger, Not a Hitter
The foremost thought of golfers as they attempt to make just about every type of golf shot from putting to full swing should be to make a swinging motion. The best golfers demonstrate the swinging motion as the simplest, most effective motion for playing the game of golf.
Those of us that study the top golfers have noticed how Tiger Woods' "golf swing" has changed over the past year. Tiger has improved his basic motion primarily by changing his arm thrusting motion into a swinging motion. This technique has improved his accuracy without sacrificing his distance. Annika Sorenstam has been the top LPGA player for several years and has always been a pure swinger of the golf club.
Four Essentials of Perfect Putting
A lot of instructors will tell you that the all good golf swings start with a good address. It is at least as important if not more important in putting. There are four essentials you need to have at address to have a great putting stroke...
One Arm Bandit
By Ted Frick
All golfers must differentiate between the leading and the trailing arm in the golf swing and the responsibilities of each arm in the motion. The hands, arms, and shoulders in the golf swing form a triangle. This triangle is known as the power package. The power package will accumulate, load, store, deliver, and transfer power from the arms to the golf club, as well as, from the club to the ball in the golf swing. The major, not minor, source of power will come from the right, or trailing, arm of the triangle. . . .
Use the Correct Part of the Club
By Brad Redding
Many golfers do not know which part of the club they should be using. When you come right down to it you can use either the club head or the butt end of the club. To know which part to use you need to evaluate your golf shots. Every golfer tends to move the golf ball either right or left . . .
